Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal, often referred to as the “Princess of Hill Stations,” is a picturesque hill station located in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal has a rich history dating back to the early indigenous inhabitants of the region. The area was inhabited by various tribal communities, including the Paliyan, Pulayar, and Paliyan tribes, who lived in harmony with the natural environment. Kodaikanal was discovered by the British in the early 19th century. In 1821, Lieutenant B.S. Ward, a British surveyor, stumbled upon this serene hill station. Impressed by its scenic beauty and salubrious climate, the British established Kodaikanal as a summer retreat and hill station.

Under British colonial rule, Kodaikanal began to develop rapidly. Roads, churches, schools, and other infrastructure were built to accommodate the growing population of British officials and settlers. The town’s pleasant climate and lush landscapes made it a favored destination for leisure and relaxation.
